L'origine du Angora est la Turquie. Il doit son nom a la ville Angora (aujourd’hui rebaptisé Ankara). Là-bas, les exemplaires blancs, nommé Ankara kedi, sont considérés comme le symbole traditionnel de la pureté. Pour la ville turque se sont de véritables trésors nationaux.
